In celebration of National Arts and Humanities month, Fall for the Arts is a month long celebration that showcases Davis art and culture. Events include: Davis Downtown’s 2nd Friday ArtAbout, live performances by musicians, gallery showings and special events, dance performances and workshops, craft fairs and much much more.


THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1

Davis Downtown will host its first annual Movie in the Park, showing the very funny, modern, cult-classic, Zoolander (PG-13). Grab your blankets, find a seat, and pick up some food, available for purchase, from Buckhorn and The Hotdogger!  Show time at 7 p.m.

Ancestral Adaptations: Indigenous Arts Coalition Exhibit

Artists from the San Francisco-based Indigenous Arts Coalition present new works by urban Indigenous artists crossing the threshold of de-colonization, reclamation, and reconstruction and how this has effected the understanding and perception of ‘Indigenous’. Artists included are Rye Purvis, Richard Castaneda, Nizhoni Ellenwood, Spencer Keeton Cunningham, Avanna Lawson, Paris Leighton Sr., Geri Montano, and Erick Andimo. Exhibit open M-F, 12-5 p.m. & Sun, 2-5 p.m., through December 4.

Avid Reader Active presents Make-Your-Own Craft Days for Kids! Every project is FREE to make! Projects include: Breyer Paint Your Own Horse + Red Toolbox Build Your Own Truck.

Ages 4+ are welcome to paint their own miniature model horse using sponges and brushes with paint. A poster will show kids the many colors horses come in. Kids can take home their horses when they’re done! A limited number of participants can get a special ribbon upon completion!
Ages 2-3 can also color in pages of horses with Faber Castell crayons and markers.
Ages 4+ are welcome to build their very own Red Toolbox Jr. truck using a kid-sized hammer. Kids can take home their creation and a special Red Toolbox “hardhat” at the end of the event.

For October’s Tsao Gallery exhibit at the Davis Arts Center, Material Worlds, artist/curator Sara Post has invited eighteen artists working in a variety of materials to show their work and to describe their process in terms of the materials s/he uses. Material Worlds will provide insights into the world of creating art, exploring how ideas find their best visual/tactile expression and the use of materials that make each piece possible. El Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Mexican holiday dedicated to the ancestors – to honor both death and the cycle of life. In Mexico, neighbors gather in local cemeteries to share food, music, and fun with their extended community, both living and departed, acknowledging that we still have a relationship with our ancestors and loved ones that have passed away. With its procession, performances and community altar, this celebration will bring Davis schools, performers, businesses, artists, community groups and leaders to the heart of Davis to give thanks to those who have touched our lives. This celebration is sponsored by Davis Downtown, Tres Hermanas, and El Burrito, who will be serving Mexican hot chocolate and pan de muertos.

Voice of the Wood Performance

Voice of the Wood will be telling Halloween and Day of the Dead children’s stories. Perfect for the little ones.

Amar Azucena Cid and her group of artists will build the Davis Community Altar at the E Street Plaza Stage. The community is encouraged to contribute offerings like photos, letters, flowers, food and mementos to place on the altar until sunset to celebrate of lives of those now gone.

4pm- Aztec Dancers Procession

Line up at 3:45pm at Tres Hermanas Mexican restaurant. Follow the dancers and the drumming to down 2nd Street to E Street Plaza. They will then call out to the spirits and do their ceremonial dances.
***We encourage all people of all ages to come dressed in traditional El Dia de los Muertos dress and costumes.
